I want to make the featured article on my home page in a blog layout alongwith a thumbnail picture beside it. is it possible to do it in this template? Thank you

You should select intro image for featured article at tab "Images and links".

I've tried that but it doesnt work. The image displayed as its original size instead of as a thumbnail.

You need to add below css:
 
.blog-featured .item-image {
	max-width: 200px; /*you can change width*/
}
