Could you help me with a question please.

It appears that landing page featured articles are authored out side of K2, in the native articles system.

Is this correct, or have I missed a step?

Hi,
Featured articles show all featured articles from one or multiple categories of Joomla's content component. You can show featured items from K2: Select a menu item type is K2 Categories, tab Options -> Featured items choose Show only featured items.

Actually, maybe I phrased the question incorrectly.

On the landing page there is an article with a picture of ants marching up what appears to be a leaf. From what I can see, this does not appears as an item in K2, but as a article in the original joomla article system. So, is landing page content authored in the original joomla article system or K2?

Depend on selecting a menu item type is joomla article or K2.
