Try to set background-size: cover, so there are no the black in container. And the size of the background image should be 1920:1080.

Edit file modules/mod_countdown/assets/css/jquery.countdown.css, find and add:
 
.countdown-bg {	
	background: url(../images/color-787251.jpg) no-repeat center top;
	background-size: cover;
	...
}
