Essay: History of Joomla

Joomla Essay Joomla Essay

Joomla is the second most popular free and open source content management system on the Internet. Needless to say but this system is used to publish content in the web. It can be used for the creation of small and big corporate websites, the Internet portals, online stores, forums and personal webpages. Joomla is written in PHP and it uses MySQL, MS SQL and PostgreSQL for data storage.

The system offers the variety of options and features that help users create, design and manage content in the web. Joomla is extremely popular all over the world. According to the latest statistics, more than 50 million users have downloaded the system as of 2014. Besides, there are more than 7,700 commercial and free add-ons that can improve the work of Joomla and its components. These extensions are found on the official Joomla! Extension Directory. Although Joomla is a popular content management system, very few people know at least anything about the history of its origin. I am going to bring this problem to light.

Joomla is a fork of Mambo. The ‘birth’ of Joomla dates back to August 17, 2005. This year is associated with the controversy between the members of the coordination board of Mambo Foundation. At that time, Mambo was a trademark of Miro International Pvt Ltd. It formed a non-profit foundation, which was aimed at the funding of the project and its legal protection from lawsuits. The development team of Joomla refused to cooperate with the new foundation saying that its rules and standards violate the previous agreements approved by Mambo Steering Committee. Apparently, the new provisions of this foundation broke the necessity of consultations with the chief stockholders regarding decision-making and management. What is more, they violated the major values of open source that had been the main feature of the project.

Mambo Foundation primarily consisted of Mambo Open Source developers who announced their refusal of Mambo Open Source. The developers made their own organization called Open Source Matters. This group consisted of Joomla project leader, Andrew Eddie, and other developers who broke their professional contacts with Miro and quitted Mambo. They created a website OpenSourceMatters.org in order to inform the total software community about their decision. The website attracted attention of thousands of people who disputed about the matter of open source and its value. Very soon, new developers joined the team and the work on the Joomla project began. I was vital to name the project in order to distinguish it from other similar ones. After long discussions the name, Joomla!, was established by the entire team. In Swahili, the word ‘jumla’ means ‘all together’. It emphasized the total idea of the project. This idea is free software. On September 29, 2005, the team chose Joomla’s logo.

The first version of Joomla, Joomla 1.0, resembled the last version of Mamba. The majority of their extensions were compatible. One can enumerate ten versions of Joomla. The release of the first version took place on September 22, 2005. The latest release of the software occurred on February 24, 2015. It will be right to mention at least several awards dedicated to the developers of Joomla. Firstly, Joomla won the Packt Publishing Open Source Content Management System Award in 2006, 2007 and 2011. It will be easy to notice the success of the entire project forasmuch the team attracted attention of the software community and won its respect rapidly. The whole group of developers positioned Joomla as rebranding of Mamba. No wonder, many users connect it to Mamba saying that Joomla is the improvement of the latter. Then, one of the leading developers, Johan Janssens, was announced to be the Most Valued Person according to PACKT Publishing in 2008. The same award reached to Louis Landry in 2009.

In these days, Joomla is one of the most popular systems for software design and content management. I should say that its origin is connected with the healthy evolution of the human society and its aspiration towards transparency and equality. Information should be accessible to everyone. Joomla meets this requirement working for the improvement of IT and distribution of information to every corner of our planet.
