I would like to put a link to the "message". Can you tell me how to accomplish this.

I would like the email address to be a link that opens up a contact form.

You can edit template file index.php, modify:
 
<?php echo $params->get('welcomeMsg'); ?>
 

to:
 
<a href="#"><?php echo $params->get('welcomeMsg'); ?></a>
 

Change # to your link.
